OSU Veterinary College Dean Rustin Moore talks with animal welfare expert Rachel D.K. Finney about his latest book!
About this Event

Join Rustin Moore, distinguished veterinarian, author, and lifelong advocate for the transformative power of the human–animal bond and Dean of Ohio State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, as he discusses his recent book, , where he blends science, storytelling, and heart to illuminate the connections that enrich and heal both people and animals. Moore will be in conversation with Rachel D.K. Finney, animal welfare expert and former CEO of Columbus Humane.

Gigi’s, a regional nonprofit that provides homeless dogs with access to quality shelter, veterinary, behavior, and adoption services, is Gramercy’s Community Partner for this program.

What if the bond between humans and animals is not only a source of comfort—but a force that can heal, divide, protect, and endanger?

In Unlocking the Bond: The Power and Paradox of Human-Animal Interactions, veterinarian, surgeon, and dean of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Rustin M. Moore, explores the extraordinary power—and hidden paradox—at the heart of human–animal relationships. Drawing on decades of clinical practice, leadership, and deeply personal experiences, he reveals how these bonds shape our health, our communities, and the future of life on a shared planet.

Blending storytelling with history, cutting-edge science and global conservation stories, Moore shows how love for animals can be both medicine and mirror—healing trauma, guiding purpose, and sometimes carrying unintended consequences. From service dogs and therapy horses to elephants, whales, and urban wildlife, each chapter uncovers moments where connection transforms lives and challenges our responsibilities.

Hopeful, honest, and deeply moving, Unlocking the Bond invites readers to look beyond sentimentality and ask essential questions about stewardship, compassion, and coexistence—and to imagine a future where humans and animals can truly thrive together.

Dr. Rustin M. Moore is a distinguished veterinarian, endowed professor, and academic leader with a career spanning four decades in veterinary medicine and animal welfare. Born in the Appalachian hills of West Virginia, he earned his undergraduate degree from West Virginia University, followed by a DVM and PhD from The Ohio State University. A passionate advocate for animal health, Dr. Moore has led community outreach and disaster response initiatives, including the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of nearly 500 horses after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. He serves on multiple boards and is a sought-after speaker on topics such as veterinary education, wildlife and zoo animal welfare, the One Health concept, and the human-animal bond.

Rachel D.K. Finney is a nonprofit executive and Certified Animal Welfare Administrator who served as the long-time Chief Executive Officer of Columbus Humane, leading the organization for 16 years and significantly expanding its programs, facilities, and community impact in animal welfare. Under her visionary leadership, Columbus Humane grew its budget and services, launched innovative initiatives like the Essential Care Center, and became a model for humane sheltering and community support before her transition from the role in 2024. She now works as an executive coach and consultant, helping animal welfare leaders and nonprofit professionals strengthen their leadership, navigate challenges, and advance mission-driven work.
