Book Club & Discussion Panel: The Life and Death of Freedom of Expression

The uOttawa Public Law Centre is delighted to invite you to a panel discussion with Richard Moon, the author of The Life and Death of Freedom of Expression on Thursday, November 28, 2024, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Fauteux Hall, room 202.

The panel discussion with the author will be preceded by two book club meetings hosted at the uOttawa Public Law Centre at 600 King Edward, room 205, from 4 to 5 p.m. on November 7 and 21, 2024. Further details will be provided to registrants.

From the publisher: “In The Life and Death of Freedom of Expression, Richard Moon argues that freedom of expression is valuable because human agency and identity emerge in discourse – in the joint activity of creating meaning. Moon recognizes that the social character of individual agency and identity is crucial to understanding not only the value of expression but also its potential for harm.

The book considers a range of issues, including the regulation of advertising, hate speech, pornography, blasphemy, and public protest. The book also considers the shift to social media as the principal platform for public engagement, which has added to the ways in which speech can be harmful while undermining the effectiveness of traditional legal responses to harmful speech. The Life and Death of Freedom of Expression makes the case that the principal threat to public discourse may no longer be censorship, but it is rather the spread of disinformation, which undermines public trust in traditional sources of information and makes engagement between different positions and groups increasingly difficult.”

Le Centre de droit public de l'Université d'Ottawa a le plaisir de vous inviter à une discussion avec Richard Moon, l'auteur de The Life and Death of Freedom of Expression, le jeudi 28 novembre 2024, de 11 h 30 à 13 h, dans la pièce 202 du pavillon Fauteux.

La discussion avec l'auteur sera précédée de deux rencontres du groupe de lecture qui se tiendront au Centre de droit public de l'Université d'Ottawa dans la pièce 205 de l’édifice 600 King Edward, de 16 h à 17 h, les 7 et 21 novembre 2024. De plus amples détails seront fournis aux personnes inscrites.
