Negro spirituals are a significant part of African American culture, and their texts often come from the Bible, the daily lives of slaves, and the desire for freedom. The spirituals are sung in a dialect that mixes African and English words, and the singers' vocal style is characterized by shouting, exclamations of "Glory!", and raspy falsetto.
The lyrics of these songs are tightly linked with the lives of their authors who were inspired by the message of God and the gospel of the Bible. The most pervasive message conveyed by spirituals is that of enslaved people yearning to be free. The slaves better than anyone understood what freedom meant in both a physical and spiritual sense.
Spirituals opened the door to freedom of expression, secret communication, and a spiritual connection with God based on their African beliefs. They have been used as a tool to heal and restore. These songs connect generations old and young because the simple messages are relatable across decades.
