A Community Discussion of August Wilson’s Fences

About this Event

In year 14 of holding community events, the August Wilson & Beyond Seminar goes back to our roots with the play we explored at our very first event: Fences.

It's 1957 in Pittsburgh's Hill District neighborhood. The world is changing around Troy and Rose Maxson, their son Cory, and the rest of their tight-knit community. It's bringing hard questions to their front door. How can we do more than standing in the same place all our lives? What do fathers and sons owe each other? And do we build fences to keep strangers out or to keep the ones we love inside?

The event includes catered lunch, staged reading performance of selections from the play by Theatre in the X, and multigenerational small group discussions led by the 2026 class members.
