Due to popular demand the Snibston Heritage Trust will be adding further Snibston Colliery Tours after the 10th April. These weekend dates are yet to be confirmed and please check with Eventbrite or if possible attend A Coal Miners Story event on the 10th April were tickets for future tours will be on sale.
Join us on the 10th April 2022 where you will get the opportunity to meet and hear from former miners who worked in the local coalmines. During the hour long tour, you will uncover the rich history of one of the last surviving coalmines in the country by exploring the surface buildings and surrounding grounds of Snibston Colliery (Mine).
A coalminer’s job was dangerous and dirty but miners have their own unique story to tell about comradery during a days work. You will learn about the intricate role of a miner, the hard work they did and the machinery and equipment they used.
There is also a display of coalmining history by local heriatge groups, including the Snibston Heritage Trust, Coalville Heritage Society, Whitwick Historical Group, Whitwick Colliery Disaster Memorial Project and South Derbyshire Mining Preservation Group.
The tours takes place on the former colliery site, Snibston Colliery Park, where there is something for all the family to enjoy. Onsite facilities include:
- Children's playground
- Nature trails
- Fishing ponds
- Outside trails
- Cycle paths
- Pump track
- Mountain bike trail
- Cafe
- Toilets and changing places
- Century Theatre - opening times vary, see website for latest shows.
The Colliery Cafe serves a range of refreshments.
Note: Tour of the surface buildings only, it is not possible to go underground at Snibston Colliery, and sensible shoes are recommended.
The tour will involve steps.
There is a maximum of 20 people per tour.
Multiple tours throughout the day at 10.30, 11.30, 12.30, 14.00 and 15.00 tours will start at the Colliery Cafe.
