Join us to celebrate the life and music of Mark Levine (1938-2022), Latin and straight ahead jazz pianist, composer, innovator and theoretician, band leader, author, teacher, mentor to many, and much more. Over his more than five decades of music, Mark Levine played with Houston Person, Woody Shaw, Blue Mitchell, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaría, Luis Gasca, Willie Bobo, and many others. His books, THE JAZZ THEORY BOOK and THE JAZZ PIANO BOOK (both published by Sher Music) are used in jazz education programs around the world.
Mark lived and played in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, and, for the past forty years, the San Francisco Bay Area. In jazz clubs and festivals around the world. As a preeminent jazz educator, he taught in music schools and gave clinics around the world, including Jazz Camp West in Cazadero, CA, Ali Ryerson’s Flute Camp in Carmel Valley, CA, Jamey Abersold’s Jazz Camp in Louisville Kentucky. Several summers at a jazz camp in Belgium. several in Mexico.
Mark’s friends will be raising up his music and his legacy in this celebration of his life and as a benefit for a new Mark Levine scholarship to the California Jazz Conservatory, where he taught since it opened as The Jazz School in 1997.
