Literary archives are often popular collections within our heritage institutions, but why are we drawn to them, and what value do they really have?
Tapuaka Heritage & Archive Collections presents an illuminating talk on the value of literary archives for research and scholarship. This event features acclaimed New Zealand authors Jenny Bornholdt and Damien Wilkins, who will discuss their own background materials to published literature and consider how literary archives in general might reveal some of the creative processes and hidden inspirations of writers.
Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington has been involved in the development and teaching of New Zealand literature throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Tapuaka’s New Zealand Literary Archive Project, begun in 1993, was established to support academic research projects into New Zealand literature and expands upon earlier manuscript holdings including the papers of dramatist and critic Bruce Mason, and James K Baxter’s biographer, Dr. Frank McKay.
The New Zealand Literary Archive Project currently includes the papers of 8 prominent New Zealand writers with strong links to Te Herenga Waka. Jenny Bornholdt has been a contributor to the project since 1993, and Damien Wilkins since 2016.
