A Beginner’s Guide to Creative Writing

Have you always wanted to write? Here’s your chance. This is a beginner’s course, an introduction to creative writing that will cover practical writing advice on: articles, short stories, poetry, novels, drama, nonfiction, and memoir. Examples of these forms will be analysed to learn the use of literary techniques and structures.
Tutor: Dr Roddie Mckenzie
Roddie McKenzie was an assistant professor in immunology at the University of Toronto, a senior non-clinical lecturer in dermatology at the University of Edinburgh and spent 25 years in research, mainly on the molecular biology and immunology of skin diseases. He has taught science to further education students and to undergraduate and postgraduate students in virology, immunology, genetics and genomics. His work has been published widely.
Roddie worked in the bio-technology industry and has an MBA. A registered practitioner with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists, he continues to work as a counsellor, which he has done for fifteen years. He holds a postgraduate diploma in counselling and qualified as an alcohol counsellor.
Roddie writes in Scots and English. He is a founder member of the Wyvern Poets and Nethergate Writers (NW). He began writing fiction in 2003 and is the NW group's current chair. He has served as an editor on the last two group anthologies.
He has written poetry, short stories, a children’s fantasy novel, a novella, and one play. He is working on a novel composed of interlinked short stories, set in a Canadian bar full of picaresque characters. He has published 63 poems, 30 stories, and five articles (see Roddie C. McKenzie - Dundee's Creative Writing Group). In his academic work, he has published 81 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 6 book chapters, and 5 book reviews
