About this Event
NEW DATE: Please join us on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 for dinner and an evening of literacy. This literacy workshop will provide an overview of the Illinois Comprehensive Literacy Plan. Since there isn't a "one - size - fits - all" model for instruction of literacy, the presenter will explore what is meant by explicit and systematic instructional methods and the need for alternative methods for literacy development. An overview of the 3 overarching goals cited for students, educators, and leaders, along with the "7 Competencies of Literacy" will be discussed and what each of these competencies mean for the diverse needs of Illinois students will be presented.
The focus of this presentation will be on the Illinois Comprehensive Literacy Plan (ICLP). Educators/participants will gain a better understanding about the ICLP along with instructional and alternative methods for literacy development. Attendees will leave with an understanding of how to begin implementing the Illinois Comprehensive Plan in their classrooms.
Presenter: Dr. Laura Beltchenko
The presenter Laura Beltchenko is an experienced presenter who has taught for over 20 years in suburban schools within Illinois. She has been a classroom teacher, reading specialist, teacher and coordinator of gifted programs, as well as, associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction for a k-12 Illinois school district. She is currently the Chair of the Illinois State Board of Education Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education. Most recently she served as a member of the drafting team of educators for the Illinois Comprehensive Literacy Plan. Laura's knowledge of children's literature supports the need for diverse, equitable, and inclusionary books as well as how they benefit children with social and emotional learning. She is passionate about instructional methods related to how we teach and will provide participants with resources and ideas that will assist them with implementing the Illinois Comprehensive Literacy Plan.
