9/11: We Will Never Forget
Written and Performed by Jason Nettle
Author’s Note
This play was written in 2010-2011 as my graduate thesis. I walked into my acting class the morning of Sept. 11th, 2010 and my younger classmates weren’t even affected by the day because they either weren’t born, were too young, weren’t in NYC, or simply, didn’t care. I thought about ways to help educate the masses and keep the spirit alive as the years go by. This show has been through many rewrites, performances, and venues and has meant something different to everybody who sees it.
I was in NYC the day of the attacks and remember almost every minute of that day and the days after. The monologues you see tonight are created from my own personal experiences, my friends’ experiences, research I did from books and interviews, and anything else I could use to bring life to a day that has the potential to become just facts and figures as the years go by. I did not title this show. Dozens of people approached me after seeing the show 7 years ago and admitted that they had indeed forgotten and they felt ashamed. It’s human nature. We move on. I don’t want the “Never” to disappear from the iconic phrase so I try to keep the lives and emotions from that day in the hearts of everyone, no matter where they are or how old they are.
