Unicorn Portrait Experience | Children’s Portrait Photography in Efland, NCThe Unicorn Portrait Experience by Katie Smith Photography is a one-day, limited-edition children’s portrait event held each spring in Efland, North Carolina. Now in its eighth year, this playful, storybook-style photo session has become one of our most requested experiences.
Designed for kids who love dress-up, imagination, and animals, the Unicorn Portrait Experience is relaxed, lighthearted, and meant to feel fun instead of formal. Sessions are guided but unhurried, allowing children to move, explore, and interact at their own pace. Some kids jump right in, while others take their time—both approaches are welcome and photographed beautifully.
The experience features Trotsky, a calm and gentle miniature horse who wears a unicorn horn for the session. Trotsky is handled throughout by an experienced professional and meets each child where they are. Some of our favorite images happen with a little space between child and unicorn—the magic doesn’t depend on closeness.
Sessions take place at the NC Therapeutic Riding Center. The session fee to reserve a spot is $49, and images are purchased separately after the session during a guided ordering appointment. Most families invest between $200–$450 on digital images and artwork.
Only 12 sessions are offered, and this event takes place one day per year. Advance booking is required.
