7th International Symposium on Animal Mortality Management

The International Symposium on Managing Animal Mortalities is a triennial symposium focusing on collaborating and sharing information to advance sustainable practices regarding animal mortalities. These conferences have had tremendous success dating back to the start in 2005 and have garnered support from around the world. The symposium is a great opportunity for those in agriculture, academia, government and other areas that have a vested interest in managing animal mortalities. The triennial symposium is an excellent opportunity to learn about the latest research, educational programs, and technologies available for disinfection, decontamination, depopulation, and disposal. This is increasingly important during times when faced with natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, floods, and when faced with animal welfare issues including disease outbreaks. The purpose of the symposium has never been more evident since the outbreak of African Swine Fever, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, and the impacts from COVID-19.

The symposium returns this year as an in-person event in Raleigh, North Carolina. Those who should attend include:

• Federal and state government stakeholders

• Veterinarians

• Academic researchers

• Extension educators

• Food and agriculture emergency managers

• Public health managers

• Food animal processors

• Renderers and composters

The symposium also serves as an opportunity to learn about managing animal tissue mortalities, products, and by-products; research; and education programs, which include:

• Students conducting graduate research in carcass disposal, disinfection, and depopulation

• Researchers from academic or other institutions

• Anyone interested in research and education to manage mortalities for disasters and high consequence livestock disease

• Food of animal origin containment, depopulation, disposal and decontamination (3-D) in response to disease and emergency events;
• Carcass management in response to routine mortalities, accidental deaths, natural disasters, intentional introduction, and disease outbreaks;
• New and emerging technologies for euthanasia, carcass treatment, and disinfection;
• Research to inform public policy on carcass disposal and the direction of future research and resource;
• Federal and state agency response and training experience;
• Carcass treatment (management) options; Health and biosecurity risk;
• Final product use, disposition, and ultimate disposal;
• Agricultural Systems Management of multifaceted aspects of carcass transport, processing, disposition and resultant feedbacks;
• International Issues: religious and societal considerations, regulatory constraints, health education programs, cross-border movement controls, acceptability of depopulation methods;
• Health and Environmental risks related to disposal;
• Food production systems and contaminated protein; and
• Regulatory trends in disposal.

Three North Carolina agricultural tours are scheduled for Monday, June 27, 2022. The tour registration fee is $150.00 per person, and this includes lunch, drinks, and snacks during the tour. All tour buses will depart the Raleigh Convention Center at 7:30 AM ET and will return around 5:00 PM ET.

Tour 1 – North Carolina Poultry Track

The Poultry tour will visit several areas highlighting the North Carolina poultry industry. This includes visiting a hatchery, poultry processing plant, broiler farm and stops at the North Carolina Zoo and a North Carolina orchard farm.

Tour 2 – North Carolina Swine Track

The Swine tour will visit several areas highlighting the North Carolina swine industry including a hog production area (which includes several farms), a presentation of a processing plant by industry personnel, feral swine trap demonstration, and a stop at a North Carolina blueberry farm.

Tour 3 – North Carolina Emergency Management, Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, and Food Animal Production Research Track

This tour will visit areas that focus on response to animal agriculture emergencies, agricultural sciences by touring the newly constructed North Carolina Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, and North Carolina State University’s Poultry and Swine Production Center, and the Howling Cow Dairy and Education Center.

As we have seen in recent years, natural disasters, pandemics, and foreign animal diseases can pose serious challenges to all areas of animal production, supply chains, government regulatory programs, local industries, and agricultural communities. For the people tasked with animal mortality recovery operations, preparedness exercises are vital to practice and improve existing protocols, identify strengths and weaknesses in processes, and to clarify responder roles and responsibilities. Exercises also offer invaluable insight and education to novice personnel who are yet to experience such events, by providing interactions with peers and mentorship from experienced responders in a relaxed environment.

This 4-hour scenario will provide challenges for responders of all levels of experience. Participants will navigate the depopulation, disposal, and decontamination challenges left in the wake of an aggressive foreign animal disease outbreak.

• Requirements and additional fees will be determined as demonstrations are planned.

• All outdoor exhibitors and demonstrators must cover any expenses associated with the setup, operation, and tear down of their displays.
• All displays or demonstrations must be in accordance with the City of Raleigh and State of North Carolina Laws. If you require additional outdoor space please contact us for information on additional associated fees.
• An expert from the company or educational institution must be onsite to set up, run, and remove the equipment.
• All demonstrations and outdoor displays must have a written plan for setup, operation (if planned), and removal submitted for approval by May 1, 2022. Please be sure to include your material and equipment needs and how you will procure the equipment.
• North Carolina State University and NCDA&CS will provide access to materials for composting including animals, but expenses for materials must be paid for by demonstrators.
• North Carolina State University can provide a list of companies to rent equipment or North Carolina State University can rent the needed equipment and then equitably divide the costs among exhibitors or demonstrators who use the equipment. This process will be determined based on exhibitor response.
• Set up for demonstrations should take place no earlier than necessary for the completion of the demonstration. Include set up plan in registration for demonstration space.
• Set up for outside displays must not start before Monday, June 27, 2022.
• Tear down and removal of all equipment and waste must be complete by 5 p.m. on June 30, 2022, from the demonstration site.
