The Valmiki Ramayana is regarded as the strot (source) and nirantaram (continuous) flow, a deep wellspring from where the diffusion began, and all the subsequent editions of the Ramayana trace their roots through twisting paths, to this origin in India. Thus when Sage Valmiki says,
"Ram is not only of India. He has a
more universal role to play", it encompasses Ramayana traditions worldwide.
The Ramayana not only links India with nations but also is a common links shared amongst nations having Ramayana tradition. The ICCR has been annually organizing the International Ramayana Cultural Festival in India', inviting interested Ramayana Tradition nations to present their version of the Ramayana on a common platform. The year 2024, is celebrated by ICCR as the 'Year of Connecting the World through Ramayana' from January - December 2024. Various cultural activities of ICCR, like exchange of Ramayana cultural delegations, Seminars / Conferences on the Ramayana, Exhibitions and Visitors' Programmes are planned, under the flagship programme, during the year 2024. The cultural activities will be organized with "Jan Bhagidari" involving partnership of the State Governments; various Ministries of Govt. of India;
Government Agencies and prominent cultural institutions. ICCR plans to organize Festivals in the iconic places of Ramayana significance like - Chitrakoot (MP), Ayodhya (UP), Sitamarhi (Bihar). Hampi (Karnataka), Kanyakumari (Tamil Nadu) and cities like Varanasi, Bhopal, Jaipur etc.
It will be an unique opportunity for the Indian audience to know the spectacular cultural forms of Ramayana followed by the foreign countries through their cultural presentations like the Kakawin Ramayana, Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet show), Wayang Wong (classical dance theater), Kecak (Balinese dance drama), and Sendratari Ramayana of Indonesia; national epic Phra Lak Phra Ram' performed Lao DPR; vividly portrayed through distinctive costumes and graceful dance movements of Khon Ramakien (Ramayana) of Thailand; Mask Ramayana of Myanmar; Dance Drama Ramayana of Singapore; Singkil, a Maranao folk dance (based on the Ramayana) of Philippines; Khmer classical dance form, ancient puppetry Ramayana of Cambodia and other Ramayana versions of Vietnam (Cham culture), Malaysia, Brunei (Seri Ram), Mauritius, Caribbean region and other parts of the world.
In this 7th edition of the India-International Ramayana Mela, the inauguration of the year-long Ramayana Festival will be held at Purana Qila, New Delhi, on Thursday, 18 January, 2024, at 11.30 am. Subsequent events of the India-International Ramayana Festival will be held from 18-21 January, 2024, from 11.30 am - 7.00 pm daily, showcasing performing and visual art activities, at Purana Qila (open air). The international performing art delegation on Ramayana will be the star attraction of the event. Performances of international Ramayana groups are also scheduled at Lucknow, Ayodhya and Varanasi during January 2024.
