7 WEEKS BEGINNERS MORNING THROWING COURSE
ABOUT THIS CLASS
This 7-week morning course provides the opportunity to learn how to throw pots on a pottery wheel.
In a small class, expertly supported by our teachers, you will learn how to work with clay on your individual wheel, and realise your designs from 2D to 3D.
Discover the steps behind making pottery and follow its lifecycle from a lump of clay to a finished piece. We will cover the whole process of making a finished pot, and give you time to practice as you learn. We hope you enjoy developing your skills, as much as we enjoy teaching pottery to our students.
Course Features:
- Demonstrations by our excellent teachers on how to throw clay on a wheel, and tutoring you on your own wheel as you learn to do it yourself.
- Practice on your individual pottery wheel with clay and your own wareboard. We will provide you with a wareboard, poly sheet, and a name label for your wareboard at the beginning of each course.
- At the end of your course we will ask you to select your favourite 3 pieces that you made throughout the 7 weeks, and we will fire and glaze them for you, and contact you when they are ready for collection - usually within a few weeks after the class. You can also enrol on a glazing course if you would like to glaze your own pieces.
If possible, please book your glazing course at the time of booking your pottery course, allowing an interval of 3 weeks between the courses.
Add Glazing Workshop (see more detail below).
- You may also take home with you whatever unfired pieces you have on your wareboard on the last day of your course, to dry, (and potentially decorate) yourself. Please bring your own protective wrapping to transport them safely. Please note that unfired pieces are decorative and cannot hold water! You will also be able to recycle the clay in these pieces at home if you want to make something new and we will send you links to our tutorials with suggestions of what to make and how to decorate your pieces, at no extra cost.
If you would like to glaze your pots yourself you might like to book into one of our 2-hour Glazing Workshops and learn the basics of glazing techniques. In that case we will keep two pots from your workshop for you to glaze. Please book your Glazing Workshop at the time of booking your 7-week course.
We really hope you will enjoy your time on the wheel as much as we enjoy teaching it, and hope to see you soon in our School of Pottery!

FAQs
When will my pot be ready for collection? Please allow at least 6-8 weeks for your pots to be ready for collection. We will email you when they are ready. Please sign your pot as instructed by the teacher. Please note - sometimes, not often, pieces don’t survive firing in the kiln and they get damaged - this is beyond any potter’s control.
What should I wear/bring? Your clothes and shoes will get wet and dirty from clay splashes so please wear comfortable clothes that you do not mind getting messy. Please bring your own apron and a hand towel.
Who is this course for? This pottery workshop will suit beginners looking for an introduction to working with clay, or those who have worked with clay before and would like a simple refresher or time on the wheel.
Is there an age limit for the Workshop? This course is generally for people aged 18 and above. A teenager over 15 may attend if they are accompanied by an adult. Please let us know in advance.
What's the course like? You will be welcomed by your teacher and brought to one of our classrooms (please let us know if you have mobility issues so we can accommodate you in the downstairs classroom, as some classrooms are accessible by stairs only). Each participant will have access to their own pottery wheel/workstation and tools for the duration of the workshop. We supply all the materials you need, but please bring your own apron and towel so as not to get your clothes wet with clay. The workshop ends with a class and equipment tidy up - another important part of the potter's training!
What are my transport/parking options getting to the workshop? The nearest Luas Red Line stop is 'Four Courts', (a five minute walk away) and many bus routes service Stop 1479 on Ormond Quay, at the junction with Capel Street. You'll also find a Dublin Bikes stand at each of these locations. Due to our City Centre location, on-street parking immediately outside the building is limited, but there is pay and display in the general area, and there are large car parks nearby at Jervis Shopping Centre and beside the Fruit and Vegetable Markets.
Is my booking transferrable and what is the cancellation policy? Please check our cancellation policy.
Are there any Health and Safety issues? Please note you will be working on a pottery wheel in a bent position which might put some strain on your neck or back or wrists. Please first consult your doctor if you have had back, neck, wrist or any other injuries.
Please keep your hair tied up and your nails short.
Where can I contact you with any questions? You can email us at [email protected].
Thank you!
