ABOUT THIS CLASS

This 7-week evening course provides the opportunity to learn how to throw pots on a pottery wheel. In a small class setting, supported by the expertise of our teachers, you will learn how to work with clay on the wheel and materialize your designs from 2D to 3D form.

Discover the steps behind making pottery and follow the process from a lump of clay to a finished piece. By the end, you will be familiarized with the process and have time to practice. We hope you enjoy developing your skills, as much as we enjoy teaching you.

Course Features:

- Demonstrations and guidance from expert teachers on how to throw clay on a wheel, handle a pottery wheel, and become autonomous with the pottery process.

- Practice on your individual pottery wheel with unlimited clay and your own wareboard. We will provide you with a wareboard, poly sheet, and a name label for your wareboard at the beginning of each course. This is to identify and wrap your work and keep it from drying out too quickly. Please take good care of your materials, as you will need them for the duration of the course.

- At the end of the course, we will ask you to select your favourite 3 pieces, and we will fire, glaze, and contact you when they are ready for collection (usually between 8-10 weeks after the class). You can also enroll in a glazing course if you yourself would like to glaze your own pieces. Add Glazing Workshop (see more detail below).

- You may also take home with you whatever unfired pieces you have on your wareboard on the last day of your course, to dry, (and potentially decorate) yourself. Please bring your own protective wrapping to transport them safely. Please note that unfired pieces are decorative and cannot hold water! You will also be able to recycle the clay in these pieces at home if you want to make something new. If so, we will send you links to our tutorials with suggestions of what to make and how to decorate your pieces, at no extra cost.

If you would like to glaze your pots yourself, you might like to book one of our 2-hour Glazing Workshops and learn the basics of glazing techniques. In that case, we will keep two pots from your workshop for you to glaze. Please book your Glazing Workshop at the time of booking your 7-week course.

We really hope you will enjoy your time on the wheel as much as we enjoy teaching!

FAQs

When will my pot be ready for collection? Please allow between 8-10 weeks for your pots to be ready for collection. We will email you when they are ready. Please sign your pot as instructed by the teacher. Please note, sometimes, in rare occurrences, pieces don’t survive the kiln firing and acquire damage. This is beyond any potter’s control.

What should I wear/bring? Your clothes and shoes will get wet and dirty from clay splashes so please wear comfortable clothes that you do not mind getting messy. Please bring your own apron and a hand towel.

Who is this course for? This pottery workshop will suit beginners looking for an introduction to working with clay, or those who have worked with clay before and would like a simple refresher.

Is there an age limit for the Workshop? This course is generally for people aged 18 and above. A teenager over 15 may attend if an adult accompanies them. Please let us know in advance.

What's the course like? You will be greeted by your teacher and brought to one of our classrooms. Please let us know if you have mobility issues so we can accommodate you in the downstairs classroom, some classrooms are accessible by stairs only. Each participant will have access to their own pottery wheel, workstation, and tools for the duration of the workshop. We supply all the materials you need, but please bring your own apron and towel so as not together your clothes wet with clay. The workshop ends with a class and equipment tidy-up.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to the workshop? The nearest Luas Red Line stop is 'Four Courts', (a five-minute walk away), and many bus routes service Stop 1479 on Ormond Quay, located at the junction with Capel Street. You'll also find a Dublin Bikes stand at each of these locations. Due to our City Centre location, on-street parking immediately outside the building is limited, but there is pay and display located in the vicinity and a large car park nearby at Jervis Shopping Centre and beside the Fruit and Vegetable Markets.

Are there any Health and Safety issues? Please note you will be working on a pottery wheel in a bent position which might put some strain on your neck, back, or wrists. Please first consult your doctor if you have had back, neck, wrist, or any other injuries.

Please keep your hair tied up and your nails short.

Where can I contact you with any questions? You can email us at [email protected].
