We are offering a unique wilderness experience that encourages students to learn how to travel light and eat wild. Utilising a minimalist toolkit, students will spend 6-days learning how to do more with less while traversing the wilderness, using bushcraft skills & techniques to enhance their experience of the natural world. The Nomadic Bushcraft Immersion is a collaboration brought to you by Wild Beings & Goanna Survival School.
This 6-day immersion will begin with 2-days of camping preparations followed by 4 nights walking around isolated bushland as a group with no outside human interaction, learning to survive from the resources the bush provides.
Learning bushcraft skills is one thing, applying them in the bush is another thing entirely. We aim to weave these two components together to bring not only a new set of skills but also the opportunity to apply them in a very unique & immersive experience. Learn a plethora of new land-based & bushcraft skills, then set out with the bare minimum for 4 days off trail, wilderness camping, foraging, fishing, hunting & trapping. This 6 day course is for those who want to deep dive into bushcraft & outdoor living skills & are willing to face discomfort whilst connecting with the bush.
What it entails:
Day 1-2 Basecamp: learning to make and pack your own woollen blanket pack, make sandals, utilise your minimalist toolkit and prepare long lasting natural food rations to take on your journey.
During this 2 day preparation camp, you will learn:
Blanket pack basics
Fibre craft, making your sleeping mat
Sandal making
Friction fire methods
Poncho shelter 101
Wild Jerky making
Pemmican making
Foraging
Survival safety
Day 3-6 Nomadic Immersion: On the morning of day 3 you and your companions will embark on a journey into a vibrant rainforest valley, carrying only the absolute essentials for survival in the wild.
For the next four days you will be off trail, learning how to read the landscape, each night you will have a new base camp, with the opportunity to explore each new destination thoroughly.
The skills on offer will vary depending on seasonality & the desires of the group but the essentials will be:
Supplementing your diet with wild foods & medicines
Providing shelter, water, fire and food while on the move
Ethically harvesting wild carbs
Net Making
Trap Making
Fishing methods (modern and traditional)
Bushcraft cooking
Friction Fire methods
Woodworking
Palm sheath vessels and weaving
Tracking
Navigation
Bird Language & ID
Natural Cordage & Rope making
plus more
We will not be hunting & gathering everything, we will take out some basic food rations of rice, pemmican, jerky & flour whilst supplementing the rest through fishing & foraging. This program is not a walk in the park! The facilitators will be teaching skills but it is up to the entire group to chip in & contribute to acquiring food.
This is the minimalist toolkit that every participant must bring:
Woollen blanket
Bushcraft knife
Canteen and metal nesting cup
USGI style poncho
Water filter (see email for exact brand)
Head Torch
30ft paracord
2x shemaghs or long scarfs
Sleep kit (thermals, beanie, sweater, wool socks)
Snake bite bandage
A certain level of fitness is required as we will be hiking through ridge side terrains & through sandy & rocky creeks.
This immersive course is for those who wish to go deep in wild living & truly get a taste of hunger, creativity, adventure, adaptability, using what the land provides to meet your basic survival needs & meeting your wild edges.
This is going to be an opportunity to go deep into the skills that have shaped us. There will be nights where you might not get much sleep, days where you might experience hunger a little more than usual but all of these experiences always lead to growth & connection. This is the ultimate way to connect with the wild landscape, in such an intimate way.
The group will be capped at 12.
This program is facilitated by 3 experienced survival, bushcraft & wilderness skills instructors & enthusiasts who not only teach these skills but also put them into practise within their own lives. Will & Eva from Wild Beings & Tom Foley from Goanna Survival School.
