In 1814, Washington, DC was not much more than a village with a few grand buildings (only 14 years old as the new nation’s federal capital). It was nearly wiped out of existence by a British invasion during the War of 1812. Nearly every federal building was burned including the White House and the US Capitol Building. Numerous opportunities were missed to avoid the calamity, but something amazing happened that spared DC. Come ride the avenues the Brits set ablaze and hear some of the fascinating stories, acts of heroism, and amazing natural circumstances that kept our beautiful city from total destruction.
