In 1974 a group of young visual artists (some of them still just students at the time)—including Diane Bertolo, Charles Clough, Nancy Dwyer, Robert Longo, Larry (LP) Lundy, Cindy Sherman, and Michael Zwack carved an exhibition space out of the walls of the hall outside their studios in a former icehouse. Before incorporating as Hallwalls that December, they had a Members Exhibition.

ALL HALLWALLS MEMBERS are invited to participate in this annual, non-juried exhibition by submitting ONE artwork for display.

Since its inception almost half a century ago, Hallwalls has held an Annual Members Exhibition. It is a premiere moment for the creativity of our members—regional, local, and beyond—to share their work with a wider audience in a non-juried, non-curated setting. Members may opt to share their newest work or pull out a classic from their vault. Members are defined as those with updated, paid dues as of the relevant drop-off date.

🌟 BRUCE ADAMS EXTEMPORAL PRIZES
As begun in 2022, Hallwalls will again be awarding two cash prizes for participating artists, made possible with funds given and raised by family and friends of Bruce Adams (August 19, 1952–March 5, 2021).
At John Massier’s suggestion, it is called the Bruce Adams Extemporal Prize, to honor Bruce (who probably exhibited in more Annual Members Shows than any other artist, starting in 1984, 40 years ago) and in reference to his long-running series of paintings entitled Extemporal Suite. “The title comes from the Latin extemporalis, meaning on the spur of the moment, or less literally, unrehearsed. These are quick paintings, mostly on paper, that I do quickly as a sort of exercise” (Bruce Adams).
Two Bruce Adams Extemporal Prizes will be awarded. A prize of $500 will be awarded as “best of show,” (as determined by staff jurors in a blind tiered ranking) for which all entrants are eligible. A second prize of $300 will be awarded to an artist under 30, to honor Bruce’s decades of dedication to teaching art to high school students and training teachers of art at Buffalo State College.
