Algeria is the largest country in Africa and covers an area of almost two and a half million square kilometers. Considered the third most developed country on the continent, Algeria is a place of many contrasts. Its north, which lies on the Mediterranean, is the most developed due to oil, while the country’s south, bordering Mali and Niger, remains plunged in the Sahara Desert.
This country has four distinguishable regions: the Atlas Tell Mountain range, a high plateau region before the Sahara, the Sahara Atlas Mountain range, and the Sahara Desert itself – which covers 85 percent of Algeria and is considered one of the most beautiful deserts in the world.
Still deeply scarred by the civil war of the 1990s, Algeria has lots to offer travelers, from its magical summers on the Mediterranean coast and breathtaking skiing winters, to a vast desert, imposing Roman ruins and prehistoric art – all infused with the depth of Arabic culture.
Trekkup, however, will be exploring one of the Sahara’s best kept secrets – the Tadrart province. Described as one of the most beautiful desert regions in the world, Tadrart is practically devoid of tourists and its Tadrart Rouge “red mountain” on the southern border with Libya and Niger, sits at the very heart of the Sahara Desert.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tadrart’s concentration of cave paintings and engravings essentially make it an open-air museum, and its everchanging desert landscape is a testament to the eternal construction of this region.
With the passage of time and the blowing of the wind, sand here accumulates at the base of rock formations and is, ever so slowly, sculpted into extraordinary beauty manifested into indescribable red sand dunes and formidable canyons that hide intricately carved stone molds and crystal-clear pools.
Here, the wind owns the silence, whimsically shaping a landscape that offers one of the most serene places on Earth to witness the breaking of dawn or the setting of the sun.
And so, on this Trekkup adventure we will tour the inside of this UNESCO Heritage complex, discovering as we go the intricate network of wadis that begin and end in Djanet. For several days we will combine desert driving expeditions with pleasant walks to explore one of the most spectacular corners of the mighty Sahara Desert – who’s in?
