About this Event
Want to try standup comedy but just don't know where to begin? Join this class to learn the skills you need to start your comedy adventure. If you've already been grinding it out in the New York scene for a few years, this class will help to elevate your comedy chops and take it to the next level!
The class will be led by Jocelyn Chia, an international touring comedian and a regular at the New York clubs including Broadway Comedy Club, Gotham Comedy Club, the Comedy Cellar, Standup NY, Comic Strip Live, West Side Comedy Club and Rodney's. You will learn the ins and outs of mining your experiences for material, crafting jokes, owning the stage, mindset, and rising up the NYC comedy ladder, all in a fun and supportive environment.
The class will culminate in a graduation show at the main stage of Broadway Comedy Club, and you will get a tape of your performance which can be used to submit to festivals and club bookers. The booker of Broadway Comedy Club will also review your tape and offer you feedback and potentially a spot(s) on the pro shows!
Jocelyn is one of the few who can both do and teach (see testimonials below. She also comes from generations of teachers), but due to her schedule she rarely runs classes. This will be her first class in 4 years and she is pleased to be offering it through Broadway Comedy Club, the first club to ever pass her.
Note that there will be one virtual (Zoom) class due to travel. Classes will run from 7pm until about 10pm and the dates are as follows:
Tuesday Sept 10 (in person)
Tuesday Sept 17 (in person)
Tuesday Sept 24 (Zoom)
Tuesday Oct 1 (in person)
Tuesday Oct 8 (in person)
Wednesday Oct 9 - Graduation show 7pm at Broadway Comedy Club: 318 West 53rd Street
The class will NOT be held at the club but will be at Cre8ive: 134 W 29th St - 2nd Floor.
Early bird pricing of $395 ends August 30th. Her last few classes sold out early so snag a spot before this one sells out!
Testimonials from previous students:
"Jocelyn crafted the course so perfectly that by week 5 all of us had our set ready for the final performance. She does not hold back on sharing pro tips on generating new materials, nailing stage presence and rising through the industry. She created a very supportive environment and many new jokes and punchlines were made while we were laughing our heads off in class." - Macy Kwok
"I loved the class! I learned a surprising amount about comedy in a short amount of time and I felt so confident by the time of the show. As a first timer, it was exactly what I needed. Jocelyn facilitated a beautiful group culture of approval, acceptance, and creativity amongst us." - Hailey Marino
"Jocelyn is not only a talented comedian, but also a gifted coach! During her workshop she helped me enhance my skills in both my delivery and writing. She shared her tried and true techniques, and made the whole workshop experience a lot of fun. Jocelyn's encouragement and coaching also helped me audition for and win a residency at a comedy club in NYC!" - Kimberly Blanchard
"My feelings about our class can be best summarized in this classic song (I've Had The Time of my Life) My friends who came to our showcase raved about every single set, and remembered jokes from everybody. They were amazed at how we all had such distinct voices, even though lots of us were just starting out and we'd studied with the same person. Jocelyn, you are such a gifted teacher. If you decide to teach again, I'm desperate to give you my money!"
- Rebecca Miller
"It was a pleasure to take comedy classes with Jocelyn in the Summer of 2019. Jocelyn is simultaneously professional, kind, and frankly just good at what she does, making her an ideal teacher / mentor. I took these classes for fun and to improve my public speaking, which is exactly what I got out of the program. The classes are worth every dollar and the group of women who took the class were genuinely supportive. Highly, highly recommend for those dipping their toes into comedy." - Julia Huebner
"Jocelyn's class was both fun and engaging, and also well structured and prepared - like a great mix of western (fun) and Asian (discipline)" - Ryo Hayashi
