5 Week Beginners Pencil Drawing Course

This is a 5 week beginners drawing course for anyone who is interested in gaining a firm foundation of the principles of pencil drawing. The course takes place on the following dates: 21/06, 28/06, 5/07, 12/07 & 19/07, 10:00am - 12:00pm.

The course is limited to 8 places to ensure I have plenty of 1 to 1 time with you. No previous experience is necessary as I will cater to the complete beginner and cover all you need to confidently tackle any subject.

Over 5 sessions, each 2 hours, I will introduce the basics of drawing and sketching, primitive shapes, light, simplifying complexity in a scene and perspective. The final session will be an in-depth guided still-life piece.

Each session will start with a 5 minute meditation to still the mind and nurture our creativity, then into the first half where I will introduce a topic and lead the class through some playful exercises, a short break, then the second half where we will apply the principles to a still-life drawing. We will then close the session with a short meditation.

My emphasis is on holding a relaxed, non-judgemental space. Art and creativity are innate in us and we can all benefit from the therapeutic effects of expressing our creativity.

Questions are welcomed and encouraged throughout the class!

The following materials will be provided:

• 9B Pencils.
• A3 Drawing pad.
• Eraser.
• Sharpener.

My name is David O'Reilly, I live in Edinburgh with my wife and son. I have spent the last 15 years as a commercial artist in the computer games industry; the last 12 of which I've spent working on the popular computer games Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption.

In my spare time I sell art online and take commissions for watercolour landscapes and portraits. I am also a yoga and meditation teacher.

I have been drawing and painting all my life, preferring pencil drawing throughout my childhood and then as a teen I took up watercolour painting, which I still enjoy.

The course will be held in the Art Room at the Salisbury Centre, 2 Salisbury Road, Edinburgh, EH16 5AB, for 5 Wednesdays from 10:00am - 12:00pm, starting 21/06/2023.

The Art Room is a light and airy space on the ground floor of the Centre with outdoor access both from the street and into the rear garden. The Centre has an accessible entrance and accessible toilet on the ground floor (level access for wheelchair users).
