5 - Day Historic Window Workshop
About this Event
Date: Friday, July 10th through Tuesday, July 14th, 9 am - 4 pm daily, with an hour for lunch (BYO). This workshop totals 30 instructional hours.
Location: Esek Hopkins House, 97 Admiral Street, Providence, RI 02908 — ample parking available in two on-site lots.
Over five days, you’ll learn how to assess and repair wooden windows under the guidance of Noel Sanchez, Preservation Carpenter. Participants will gain an understanding of how windows have been historically constructed, common problems such windows face, and what tools, products, and techniques can be used to repair them. This workshop is open to all, but some carpentry skills are needed. A window will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own!
Schedule at a glance:
Day 1: Overview of window components,overview of the restoration process, and glass removal
Day 2: Paint removal
Day 3: Wood repair and restoration
Day 4: Glazing and installation
Day 5: Final painting and installation techniques
Who Should Attend/Experience Level: Open to all. The workshop will have different levels of experience for those with more advanced skills.
Attire: Wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you’re comfortable getting dirty. Please bring your own tools, tools that you need include:
- Wood Rasp
- Safety goggles
- Nail Remover
- Flat paint scraper
- Flexible putty knife
- Small hammer,
- and if you have it, a heat gun.
