Save Ferris is a ska-punk band formed in Orange County, California in 1995, led by dynamic frontwoman Monique Powell. The band rose to mainstream success in the late 1990s, thanks to their high-energy sound and Powell's distinctive vocals. Starting from humble beginnings playing local venues and house parties, Save Ferris gained traction after KROQ DJ Rodney Bingenheimer played their cover of "Come On Eileen," sparking massive interest. This led to a record deal with Epic Records and the release of their debut album It Means Everything in 1997. Save Ferris toured extensively in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with their second album Modified dropping in 1999. The band went on hiatus in 2003, and Powell spent time as a sought-after studio musician. In 2015, after undergoing a life-threatening surgery to fix her neck, Powell made a promise to her father to bring Save Ferris back if the procedure was successful. With her recovery, the band reformed in 2015, played sold-out shows, and released the EP Checkered Past in 2017.
The band's early DIY spirit was evident when they released their debut EP, Introducing Save Ferris, in 1996 on Powell's own Starpool Records, selling nearly 20,000 copies through grassroots efforts. They also contributed to the ska scene, with Powell providing vocals for Reel Big Fish’s "She Has a Girlfriend Now" on their 1996 album Turn the Radio Off. Save Ferris' blend of punk and ska became an iconic sound of the third wave ska movement, with Powell at the helm, and their return to the stage in the 2010s was met with widespread enthusiasm. In recent years, Powell has been working on new music for Save Ferris, signaling that the band’s future is as bright as ever, with new albums and high-energy performances ahead.
