The Annual Pilgrimage to The Shrine continues the tradition established by the surviving members of the 4th Light Horse Regiment. There is a tendency for ex-service people to wonder why they made it home while others were not so fortunate.
The old boys of the 4th Light Horse felt this quite keenly. These soldiers had been though hell and had left fallen comrades at Gallipoli, in the desert sand and in the mud of the trenches.
When the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance was brand new they claimed the 1st Sunday in February as their date to hold an annual memorial service in the Sanctuary.
Those heroes have all faded away but we of the 4th Light Horse Regiment Memorial Association strive to uphold that tradition. There are other groups that want our spot on the calendar so we need solid attendance numbers each year to justify our continuing claim.
All are welcome. Meet in the Foyer of The Shrine’s Visitors’ Centre around 2:30 pm. This is at The Shrine of Remembrance so please dress respectfully. Wear their medals and your medals, if you have them.
From the Foyer we move to the Sanctuary for the memorial service. A special highlight of which is our bugler’s (4thLHRMA Vice President John Mansfield) haunting rendition of the Last Post.
Outside again we gather at the Horse Trough to remember the special relationship between those troopers and their mounts.
After the formalities there is the opportunity to mix at the BYO picnic “under the Oak Tree”.
Parking can be tight so make sure to leave enough time to get to the Visitors’ Centre. Or travel by train, taking advantage of the new Anzac station
