48th Annual Black April Commemoration: Lễ Tưởng Niệm Tháng Tư Đen 2023

The Fall of Saigon on April 30th, 1975, also known as Black April, 48 years ago marked the end of the Vietnam War and catalyzed the mass exodus of refugees from the Republic of Vietnam and Southeast Asia worldwide.

On April 30th, 2023, at the San José City Hall Rotunda in San José, California, the Vietnamese American Roundtable (VAR) invites you to join our community for the 11th Annual Black April Commemoration of the 48th Anniversary of the Fall of Saigon, this year themed "Highlighting Our Heroes: Starlight in the Night Sky."

Forty-eight years after the Fall of Saigon this year, we will recognize and pay homage to the perilous journeys our ancestors and families embarked upon and how so many relied on the starlit night sky to navigate their way across the Pacific Ocean for better opportunities. This year's program and exhibits will highlight our heroes, those who shine their light on our communities and lives: strong-willed individuals dedicated to laying the foundation for the descendants of refugees and immigrants of the former Republic of Vietnam for us here at home in the United States of America.

The 2023 Black April Commemoration will begin at 2:00 pm, with doors opening at 1:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided during the reception at 4:30 pm. RSVP's recommended through Eventbrite. Black attire highly recommended.

The program will feature a flag-raising ceremony at San José City Hall, multigenerational performances and speakers, and a reception with interactive and educational exhibits on Vietnamese American histories, experiences, identities, and accomplishments presented in partnership with community-based organizations and volunteers from local high school and collegiate Vietnamese Student Associations.

The 11th Annual Black April Commemoration will be co-hosted by the Office of San Jose District 7 Councilmember Bien Doan and is funded by the City of San José's Festivals, Parades, and Celebrations Grant and the gracious support of our event's Gold, Silver, and Bronze level sponsors listed below.
