Before the invention of a portable power source, farmers had to rely upon animals, their own muscles, or waterpower to perform some of their most difficult work. In the 1870’s a portable, single cylinder, water-cooled, gas-powered engine was invented that could drive a large wheel. A wide leather belt connected that wheel to a variety of specialized machines and changed farm life forever. Logs could be cut to length, then split and milled to produce building materials, hay could be baled, grain threshed, water pumped, and the list went on.
These engines are loud, ingenious, and fascinating. They simply draw the bystander into an era when suddenly everything became possible for a fraction of the previous effort and time. You will see it all up close, smell the steam and oil, hear the power, and be truly impressed.
The Granite State Steam and Gas Engine Society will hold their Spring meet in Dunstable at the Little Red Schoolhouse on Sunday, May 5th from 7:00am to 1:00pm. These people are serious and really do arrive early and are gone shortly after noon so make it your first stop. This is a unique, free, family activity and we truly hope you can join us to experience a piece of live history!
