Hike led by Mackenzie Kleinpeter, Certified Advanced Florida Master Naturalist
Discover Northeast Florida as its first inhabitants experienced it by exploring the north end of an untouched barrier island on Little Talbot’s four-mile Dune by walking through two miles of mature maritime forest across ancient dune ridges. The final stretch of the hike leading to the beach.
Bring the whole family, but for the comfort of your pet and others, please leave the pets at home. If you decide to bring kiddos remember this is a 4.1-mile hike, up to you for age discretion. Bring your binoculars if you have them, and make sure to bring plenty of water. Try not to wear any strong scents, as we don’t want to scare off the critters.
Make sure to wear sun protection and a hat as large areas of the trail are exposed.
We will be hiking, bird watching, looking for animal tracks and signs in the area, plant identification, and free coloring sheets/stickers for any kids.
Directions:
From Jacksonville, drive north via I-295E over the Dames Point Bridge and exit at Heckscher Dr (SR 105). Drive east. After the highway passes the Mayport Ferry dock 9 miles into the drive, the road becomes A1A. Continue 5 more miles to the park entrance on the right. Park in the first parking area past the entrance station and walk back along the park road to the trailhead.
Park admission is not included in the guided hike fee. The park entrance fees are as follows: $5 per car and exact change is required.

Located south of a sharp bend in the St. Johns River, more than 6,200 acres of natural communities are represented in Dunns Creek State Park. These natural communities include sandhills covered with longleaf pines, wiregrass and sand pine scrub. These protect several endangered and threatened species such as the gopher tortoise, fox squirrels and other native animals.
Enjoy walking through saw palmetto scrub and longleaf pine hammocks, while learning about the importance of prescribed fire and its role within Dunns Creek.
