Jelando Johnson is establishing himself as a premier jazz artist and professional musician in the music industry. A graduate of Texas Southern University, he spent years as a member of the award- winning TSU Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Howard Harris. It was there and many other venues where he developed styles in jazz, rhythm & blues, latin, country and gospel music.
Those skills have led to performances with such artists as George Duke, Marion Meadows, Kim Waters, Bobby Lyle, Melba Moore, Hubert Laws, Peter White, Kirk Whalum, Bob James, Jonathan Butler, Najee, Stanley Jordan, Natalie Cole, Cyrus Chestnut, Bob Baldwin, Patrice Rushen, Michael Henderson, Cherelle, Gail Jhonson (musical director for Norman Brown), Karen Briggs, Ronnie Laws, Eric Darius and many others. He also shares the stage with some of Houston’s top performers such as Kyle Turner, Michael Ward, Althea Rene, Horace Alexander-Young, and the Da Camera Performing Arts Series, just to name a few.
Jelando has shared his talents through many recordings, musical productions and festivals throughout America, South Africa, Canada, Jamaica and the Carribean. Not settling for complacency, he is also a composer, arranger, and producer of his own music. He’s been involved in educating the young and the young at heart through private teaching sessions and public presentations through group performances. In the summer of 2012, Jelando's debut single "Wings of an Eagle" was released through his company, JARAH Enterprises, LLC and will be included on his upcoming CD.
Listeners can look forward to a musical journey that will lift their spirits while the groove captures their souls. It's what Jelando lives for: making music that makes a difference in the lives of every listener. "For me, it's not about playing an instrument, but BEING an instrument, used by God to bring joy and encouragement through this powerful median called music."
