Mike Gamble is an adventurous guitarist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist whose work draws on extended performance techniques, improvisation, and emerging technologies.
Approaching music as a vehicle for multi-layered expression, he moves fluidly between melody and abstraction, precision and risk.
A graduate of the New England Conservatory, Gamble developed a formidable technical command of guitar and acoustic instruments before expanding his practice to include MIDI systems, audio-reactive software, and interactive technologies. For over two decades, he has been a vital presence in the creative jazz, experimental rock, and improvised music scenes across North America and Europe. He has performed and toured extensively at festivals including Saalfelden Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, NYC Winter Jazzfest, and SXSW, and has collaborated with artists such as Shahzad Ismaily, Bobby Previte, Todd Sickafoose, Nels Cline, Wayne Horvitz, Matt Chamberlain, Laura Veirs, Dana Reason, Lori Goldston, and Gabriel Kahane’s Oregon Symphony Open Music Orchestra.
Gamble has recorded on more than 50 albums spanning a wide range of genres. His critically acclaimed guitar trio The Inbetweens, with bassist Noah Jarrett and drummer Conor Elmes, has released five albums. After earning an MA in Interdisciplinary Art from Oregon State University, he further expanded his work to include immersive live sound and video performance, and co-founded They Gamble, an experimental new-media collaboration with filmmaker Devin Jane Febbroriello. He also performs regularly in Portland with his groups 2uo, Neighbors, TWANS and GAMSIM that feature Machado Mijiga, Garrett Baxter, Noah SImpson, Mike Lockwood, and Andrew Jones
Mike Gamble is the Artistic Director of Portland’s long-standing experimental music organization, the Creative Music Guild. He also serves as a Contemporary Music Industry instructor at Oregon State University and teaches guitar at Reed College.
Since arriving in Portland in 2009, multifarious bassist Andrew Jones has been difficult to categorize. Locals might have seen him on stage at a jazz club, playing balkan folk music at the Laurelthirst, or accompanying experimental theater in a chicken coop in deep SE.
He may have been getting deeply weird with guitar astronaut Mike Gamble at NO FUN or singing a haunting duet with powerhouse singer-songwriter Kelli Shaefer at Mississippi Studios.
He’s also spent time traversing Europe, Australia and North America with artists like the critically acclaimed Julia Holter, Brooklyn art rock veterans Barbez and DIY avant-pop power couple Teton. While his work as a session player, improviser, arranger, recordist, and mixer has appeared on dozens of records and hundreds of gigs stretching across a multitude of stylistic universes, Jones has also been crafting his own unique musical world.
The Crenshaw, a self-titled full length album documenting his duo with drummer Christopher Johnedis combined dastardly vocal/upright bass counterpoint with 90s EDM inspired beats and shimmering virtual synths to earn him a reputation among pacific northwest avant gardists.
Under the moniker and/or you, Jones is distilling those elements into a more focused and lyrically driven art song.
Classically-trained, jazz-weathered, and eclectically inclined, multi-instrumentalist Machado Mijiga left the proverbial creative "box" at a very early age, with access to many instruments and a diverse musical background brought about by an intercultural heritage.
A Portland native, Mijiga is a musical polymath; composer, producer, bandleader, educator, gear fanatic, and audio engineer, to name a few.
Mijiga studied classical and jazz saxophones at University of Puget Sound from 2012-13 and Washington State University from 2013-2017, with elective studies in Percussion at UPS in 2012, and ensemble experience at Whitman College from 2008-2012.
Mijiga has shared the stage and/or collaborated with the likes of Ghost Note, The Black Pumas, “Weird Al” Yancovic, Esperanza Spalding, Benny Golson, Terence Blanchard, Brian McKnight, Charlie Hunter, Mark Giuliana, Bill Watrous, Tamir Hendelman, John Clayton, Eddie Palmieri, Fareed Haque, Darrell Grant, George Colligan, Damian Erskine, Todd Sickafoose, Thomas Marriott, Joe Kye

Mijiga has toured with GRAMMY winning band Portugal.The Man playing saxophone, drums, keyboards, and electronics, and has played world-famous festivals and venues, such as Red Rocks, Radio City Music Hall, Hollywood Bowl, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Wonderbus, Edgefield, Triple Door, Metro, The Atlantis, Whalebone, Sherblues, and Racket NYC, as well as done virtual performances for KEXP and Taco Bell.
Mijiga has served as Artist-in-Residence at (Portland's) Roosevelt High School and Beaumont Middle School, along with being a guest lecturer and workshop collaborator for Portland State University.
As a composer, Mijiga recently won the Portland Jazz "Composers Cook-Off" in 2020 and became one of Third Coast Percussion's "Creative Currents" Partners in 2021, transitioning to an administrative role for CCP in 2026.
Mijiga serves on the board for the Creative Music Guild and the Jazz Society of Oregon, and has served as a community panelist for the Regional Arts and Culture Council, and has worked as both a collaborator and consultant for Montavilla Jazz and Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble.
As a producer and audio engineer, Mijiga currently has 35 records, 22 EPs, and 18 singles released under his name, with all but two of these releases self-produced.
Mijiga has also served as a freelance producer and engineer for artists such as Rob Araujo, Darrell Grant, and more.
Authenticity and uniquity assume the locus of Mijiga's artistic identity — self-expression is the prime directive, and the medium of choice changes like the weather.
