On Saturday, September 7, 2024, Lil Miss Story Hour will partner with Knob Hill Urban Arts District to host their 3rd Annual Back to School Culture Fest!
We will celebrate the beautiful culture and heritage representing of all of our community members through stories, storytelling, and a variety of art forms. We will bring the heart of Knob Hill Urban Arts District to life for one magical day with live art, workshops, speakers, vendors, food trucks, a silent art auction, giveaways, and more.
In particular, this event aims to welcome our children back to school with a Lil Miss Story Hour kids corner, that will include a chalk festival; an anti-bullying workshop with Dr. Juliana Deans; story times with Lil' Miss Story Hour; puppets courtesy of Katy Williams Design; a Theatre Across Borders theatrical performance; S.T.E.A.M. activities courtesy of Theatre Across Borders and Pikes Peak Children's Museum; a petting zoo courtesy of the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's ZOOMobile Program; face painting with Irishimo Graves; an art experience with Kay Gaynor (Momoxoart); a Karate seminar/demonstration courtesy of Universal Kempo Cimarron Hills and East Central Kempo Karate; and an outdoor workshop.
A backpack full of school supplies will be given to every child in grades PreK-3 through 6th attending this event! Additionally, free haircuts will be available courtesy of Sunday Barber Co. for kiddos aged 4 and up between 1pm and 3:30pm. Haircuts will be first come first served, so get to the event early!
Among some of our entertainers will be Colorado Springs-based hiphop sensations, the Reminders; Denver-based band, Willow Tree Trio; Colorado Springs-Based Indian Classical Dance instructor and performer, Tejas Hemsell; Chicago-based DJ, MC, singer, performer, and owner of Seven Sun Art, DJ3sixty5; DJ, Poet, & Event Organizer, Christopher Beasley; Ballet Folklorica dancers; and the Sweetwater Powwow group!
Among some of our guest speakers will be Mayor Mobolade (still to be confirmed) and Para Olympic Athlete, Madison Champion (still to be confirmed).
This year we will be adding a Fitness Corner to our festival, so dress to get fit! There will be Zumba Class with Fitness with Natilia and Leona Abdullah Ward of In-Balance Studios; L;ive, and Heatlh Nut Fitness (Alicia Nolan); and (still to be confirmed is Get Movin' PT (Ladonna Reed); ).
Some of our amazing Colorado Springs-based vendors and nonprofits this year will include Inside Out Youth Services, Ent Center for the Arts, The Hause Collective, Eco Village, Vinyl & Patties, Three Sticks Mafia; the Sachs Foundation; Underline; Pikes Peak Arts Council; Universal Kempo Cimarron Hills; East Central Kempo Karate; Seven Sun Art; Theatreworks; Platte Collections; and Katy Williams Design.
Among our food trucks this year, we will have Addy's Fry Bread and Conrad's Flava Fusion.
We will have a live mural art painting this year by Denver-based artist and muralist, Ratha Sok.
Mark your calendars and bring the whole family to celebrate Colorado Springs' art in the heart of Knob Hill and welcome our kiddos back to school! Our headlining performers, Colorado Springs-based hiphop sensations, the Reminders, will perform from 4:15pm to 5:30pm!
