The 38th New Music Festival, Inc. Gala Concert will be on Sunday, May 19th, from 3 pm to 5 pm and is open to the public of all ages with FREE admission and parking. It will be held at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church (part of Holy Apostles Parish) at 421 Covington St., off of Rayen Ave., right by downtown Youngstown. It is wheelchair accessible and has an elevator. The entrance to the church is near the parking lot in the back of the church, not via the front doors. A reception with refreshments will immediately follow the concert.
"The New Music Guild, Inc. 2024-25: The Guild focuses on performance of works by living composers and sponsored visits by guest composers and performers. The season culminates with the nationally recognized Annual May Festival that includes concerts and lectures, as well as elementary and high school educational events.
The 38th New Music Guild, Inc. Festival will be May 17-19, 2024.
There will be a reception after the Sunday afternoon concert in honor of Thomas Osuga, Sho Omagari and Wanda Sobieska. All events are free and open to the public.
On Friday, May 17th, 2023 Thomas Osuga and Dr. Sho Omagari will kick off the 38th Festival by playing four School Children’s Concerts. At 8:00 am they will play at Canfield Middle School; at 8:30 a.m. they will perform a second Canfield show; at 11:00 am they will perform at Taft Elementary School in Youngstown; and at 1:00 p.m. they will visit Lordstown Middle and High School for an auditorium assembly in Lordstown, Ohio.
Residing in New York City and a frequent guest artist on the Guild concert series in the past, Dana alumnus Osuga is a highly gifted pianist and arranger with a special flair for choosing inventive and imaginative programs. His technical and sight-reading skills are legendary. Dr. Omagari lives in New York and Japan and continues an active career as violin soloist.
Osuga and Omagari will highlight the Festival Gala at Sts. Peter & Paul Church, Holy Apostles Parish, 421 Covington St. in downtown Youngstown, at 3:00 pm Sunday, May 19th, 2024. They will present works by Rachmaninov, Vitali, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Yolanda Adams, Louise Andriessen, Steve Reich, and Robert Rollin. The Festival Chamber Orchestra conducted by Rollin will perform works by Johannes Brahms, Polish composer, Mieczyslaw Karlowicz; Kent, Ohio composer/arranger Wanda Sobieska; Rollin and more. Admission is free.
Thomas Osuga was a Music Theory and Composition student of Dana Professor Emeritus Robert Rollin (local New Music Guild, Inc. Coordinator) years ago. Osuga has been on the faculty of New York City’s Mannes College and co-coordinator of the Preparatory Piano Division (http://www.newschool.edu/mannes/) since 1994. He maintains a large private studio in upper Manhattan. His students regularly pursue careers at top levels conservatories, colleges, and graduate schools. An internationally acclaimed solo and chamber artist, he is founder and artistic director of Aurista Chamber Music a flexible ensemble known for its Metropolitan New York City performances (http://www.myspace.com/auristachambermusic). Organizer and faculty member at international music festivals in Italy and Germany, he presently coordinates concerts at the Puffin Foundation in Teaneck, New Jersey. He has recorded for the Capstone, Legacy, and Coronet labels.
German born violinist Sho Omagari began performing at age 5. Omagari holds a Bachelors of Music from the Mannes College, the Masters from the Juilliard School of Music, and a Violin Doctorate from the State University of New York at Stony Brook under full scholarship. He has won numerous prestigious awards and was the first recipient of the Circle of Wind Music Scholarship Award in memory of the victims of 9/11 and the 3/11 Japanese Earthquake. His ocean liner performance in memory of Titanic victims was broadcast worldwide. He concertizes regularly.
