330p UNBREAKABLE It’s hard to believe Shyamalan was able to deliver what is arguably his masterpiece just 1 year after he made his breakthrough The Sixth Sense.
Unbreakable also has a dynamite twist yet, maybe more than any other Shyamalan, incorporates that twist organically into the story so knowing it in no way affects your enjoyment of the picture.
Bruce Willis is former football star turned security guard David Dunn who somehow is the only survivor of a train accident that killed all other 131 passengers but himself. Dunn is soon invited to meet comic book art curator Elijah Price (the always incredible Samuel L. Jackson) who suffers from extreme fragile bones making him prone to breaks and fractures. Price believes if he is that fragile then Dunn might be an actual superhero who is “unbreakable”. But Dunn, in a troubled marriage, failing in life, knows himself to be normal. Nothing special.
Where the movie goes from there is fascinating. A meta-emotional look at our American fascination with comic books, super heroes, and the need to see Good fight Evil, Unbreakable is one of Shyamalan’s most profound works. A movie of great pop art insight. Both an entertainment AND an examination of why we need such an entertainment.
Shyamalan was so obsessed with this world, he would return to it in two later movies. We screen the first on 35mm in a movie palace.
Today, we screen a Shyamalan double feature on 35mm. You can get tickets to an individual movie or get the MOVIE TWIST DOUBLE FEATURE pass (both movies, best deal). See them both in one of Los Angeles's very first and original movie palaces.
