Each year Willamette University hosts the Salem Peace Lecture where a guest lecturer is invited to speak on an issue that is relevant to the peace and well-being of our society today. This year's Salem Peace Lecture will be held on October 26, 2022, in Willamette University's Smith Auditorium. It will also be available to watch as a livestream through the following link:We will be hearing guest lecturer Dr. Ira Helfand speak on the topic: “Back from the Nuclear Brink: Prescription for Survival.” Dr. Helfand is the co-chair of the National Physicians for Social Responsibility’s Nuclear Weapons Abolition Committee, the co-president of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) and one of the originators of the Back from the Brink international campaign. With his extensive knowledge on the nuclear weapons issue, we are honored to have him share his insights, as this year’s speaker, on the global consequences of nuclear war.
In addition, this year’s Salem Peace Lecture will see the 2022 Peacemaker of the Year award go to the local organization PCUN (Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste). PCUN has provided leadership, advocacy and people power to improve the lives of farmworkers since 1976. PCUN works to combat the long-standing inequities farmworkers and Latinx working families face by advocating at both the state and national levels for safer working conditions and fair wages. Through their advocacy and community-building, PCUN aims to empower Latinx families to take action against exploitation and to have a voice in the policies that affect their well-being.
Join us for a night of recognizing and learning from those who have been working to make our communities better!
