HUNTINGTON, WV - The Carter G. Woodson Memorial Foundation, Inc. presents its 30th Annual Fundraising Banquet Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 6 p.m. The banquet will be held in the Lower Level, Room BE-5 in the Marshall University Student Center.
Introducing our Keynote Speaker: Dr. Joe William Trotter, Jr.
Dr. Joe William Trotter, Jr. was born and raised in the southern WV coalfields of McDowell County WV during the Jim Crow era. He is now the Giant Eagle University Professor of History and Social Justice and past History Department Chair at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; the Director and Founder of Carnegie Mellon’s Center for African American Urban Studies and the Economy (CAUSE) and Past President of the Urban History Association. Dr. Trotter is a prolific author, with recent publications including "Workers on Arrival: Black Labor in the Making of America," "Pittsburgh and the Urban League Movement: A Century of Social Service and Activism," and "African American Workers and the Appalachian Coal Industry." Dr. Trotter's impactful contributions extend beyond academia, encompassing leadership roles in various professional organizations and significant involvement in community projects aimed at addressing racial and class inequalities. A full biography will be included in the Discussion section of this Facebook event.
The Foundation is also excited to announce our annual scholarship winner and provide updates on the foundation's progress toward a Civil Rights Museum in the historic Memphis Tennessee Garrison home in Fairfield West.
Reserved tickets are $30 donation per person, with 8-seat corporate table reservations available for $400. Additional donations are welcome. Funds raised will help the Carter G. Woodson Memorial Foundation provide academic scholarships, and to realize its vision of a Black History and Civil Rights History Museum in Huntington’s Fairfield community, through restoration of the Memphis Tennessee Garrison home.
Tickets are available now but we are close to selling out! Any additional ticket sales must be made by calling Rebecca Glass at 304-633-0996. (Please leave a message with your name and the number of tickets needed.)
