Monsters like Godzilla, King Kong, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon are practically put on display in the movies that tell their stories, but there are stories that feature MONSTERS WE DON’T GET TO SEE, or at least rarely get a good look at, and we’ll talk about why. And haunted houses are a celebrated trope in horror, but the HAUNTED OBJECTS that thrill us in many stories get less attention; we’ll think about how they work. Finally, horror fans are used to surprise developments late in a story, but we’re often stunned by stories with an EARLY PLOT TWIST. How do these stories manage to sneak up on us, and more importantly, why do they do it?
Our favorite expert of horror, Dr. Gina Brandolino, is welcomed back to Westland to talk about 3 tropes you might be surprised you recognize. This talk is Part 2 and the conclusion of a series that began in the spooky season of 2024, but you need not have attended Part 1 to enjoy Part 2. We’ll pay special attention to the movies Jaws, which turns 50 this year, and Psycho, which turns 65!
