For many Native American tribes, coiling is a "living tradition" that blends spiritual significance with technical skills.
About this Event

Muffin Hand is from Athena, Alabama. She moved to Montgomery in 1968 to attend Huntingdon College and later Troy University. Muffin taught elementary school for 30 years. After retiring, she worked for the Montgomery District Attorney. After leaving this position, she has been traveling and doing volunteer work. She is currently an instructor for Ocher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Auburn University Montgomery.

Muffin started making pine needle coiled baskets in 2005. Not long after, she started coiling to gourds. Two of her first art gourds were selected for the 2007 Alabama Originals: Contemporary Crafts Show at the RSA Tower, Alabama Artist Gallery. She has also exhibited at Pike Road, the Sturdivant Hall Artesian Fair in Selma, Black Belt Treasures in Camden, the Rumbling Water thrift shop in Wetumpka, and OLLI.

Muffin has taught private and group lessons around the state, taught three sessions at the John C. Campbell Folk Art School in Brasstown, North Carolina, and contributed an article to Gourd Magazine on the 2011 Alabama Tornadoes. She used pine needles from downed pine trees. That specific gourd has round spots that she transformed into faces and donated to the Children’s Harbor.
