Learn about Afro-Puerto Rican drum and dance with Segunda Quimbamba! We've been teaching the rich cultural folkloric music for almost 30 years in Jersey City. Fun, energetic and engaging in the arts and community! Classes are for ages: 9 and older
March 5 - June 4 with a Student Recital. Open Enrollment ends March 19.

What can we expect? Full Access with elevators, studios on 3rd floor and theater on 2nd floor, plenty of daylight, cubbies for personal items and bathrooms on each level. A SQFC team member will be at the entrance to greet you to make sure you are signed in, address any questions and direct you to the studio.
Dance: Classes begin with a warm up then the learning of Bomba rhythms, steps and choreography: Sica, Gracima, Yuba, Cuembe, Holandes and Seis Corrido. You learn Plena rhythms, steps and choreography, done also in pairs. Learn songs and lyrics in call-and-response method, all sung in Spanish.
Drum: Students are introduced to the Bomba and Plena drums - all major and minor percussion elements.

Class dates are March 5, 12, 19, 26; April 2, Off Easter, April 16, 23, 20, May 7, Off Mother’s Day -Performance Prep/Tech and Final Dress RehearsalsMay 21, 28, and Saturday, June 3, 1 – 5 PM in the Theater.
June 4 is the Student Recital with Segunda Quimbamba: 1- 6 PM
We offer beginners and advanced learning to students. Families and returning students discount available. Intergenerational experiences. Maximum 22 students per class.
Attend biweekly Zoom meetings: Hablando con los Maestros. Covering additional practice, discussions of cultural history, the instruments, the rhythms, the diaspora or whatever is on YOUR mind, community building using different platforms for shared learning experiences.
Students are assessed by the SQFC team for appropriate class learning. We ask you to help us get to know you. Please inform the team of your needs to ensure your comfort level and full participation in the classroom experience. It is important we know we are engaging you in an appropriate and safe way for movement in your body. We are here to support your learning.
Learning both dance and drum art forms enhance the knowledge of the rhythms and their interconnected intricacies. Adults and children 9 and older are welcome into this program. Classes are for beginners and intermediate students. A limited number of skirts and drums are available to use in class. Dancers dress comfortably. Socks or barefoot for dance. If you own a bomba or djembe or plena drum, please bring it to class.

DANCE:
2 – 3 PM Dance I Beginner (9 – Adults) $225 _____

*This class is for dancers who have mastered basic foundational bomba rhythms. Dancers who are deepening learning practices in improvisational conversations with the drum. Explore collaborative group choreography process: creating in community. Expanding vocabulary in the body.
DRUM:
4:00 – 5:00 PM Drum Class (12 – Adults) $225 _____
Returning Students Disc. $200 _____
Students receive 10 hours of instructional classes, plus 8 hours in performance prep and showcase: tech and dress rehearsals. Presentation to the community: Recital 4 hours. The program is 22 hours.
COMBO CLASSES:
DANCE & DRUM 2-hour program $350 _____
Students receive 20 hours of instructional classes, plus 8 hours in performance prep and showcase: tech and dress rehearsals. Presentation to the community: Recital 4 hours. Combo Program is 32 hours.

Hemos estado enseñando la rica música folclórica cultural conocida como la Bomba y la Plena durante casi 30 años en Jersey City. ¡Divertido, enérgico y comprometido con las artes y la comunidad! Bailar: Las clases de baile comienzan con un calentamiento y luego el aprendizaje de ritmos, pasos y coreografías de Bomba: Sica, Gracima, Yuba, Cuembe, Holandes y Seis Corrido. También enseñamos los ritmos, pasos y coreografías de Plena, hechos también en parejas. Aprende canciones y letras en llamada y respuesta, todas cantadas en español.
Tambor: Los estudiantes son introducidos a los tambores Bomba y Plena, todos los elementos de percusión mayores y menores.

Recital estudiantil con Segunda Quimbamba: domingo 4 de junio, 1- 6 PM
Ofrecemos aprendizaje principiante y avanzado a los estudiantes. Descuento para familias y estudiantes que regresan disponible. Experiencias inter- generacionales. Máximo 22 estudiantes por clase.
Asista a reuniones quincenales de Zoom: Hablando con los Maestros. Cubriendo prácticas adicionales, discusiones sobre historia cultural, los instrumentos, los ritmos, la diáspora o lo que sea que esté en SU mente, construyendo comunidad utilizando diferentes plataformas para compartir experiencias de aprendizaje.
Los estudiantes son evaluados por el equipo de SQFC para el aprendizaje apropiado en clase. Te pedimos que nos ayudes a conocerte. Informe al equipo de sus necesidades para garantizar su nivel de comodidad y plena participación en la experiencia del aula. Es importante que lo estamos involucrando de una manera apropiada y segura para el movimiento en su cuerpo. Estamos aquí para apoyar su aprendizaje.
Aprender las formas de danza y arte del tambor juntos mejora el conocimiento de los ritmos y sus complejidades interconectadas. Adultos y niños mayores de 9 años son bienvenidos a este programa. Las clases son para principiantes e intermedios.
Un número limitado de faldas y tambores están disponibles para usar en clase. Los bailarines se visten cómodamente. Calcetines o descalzo para bailar. Si tienes una bomba o djembe o un tambor de plena/pandero, por favor tráelo a clase.

*Esta clase es para bailarines que han dominado los ritmos básicos de la bomba. Bailarines que están profundizando en prácticas de aprendizaje en conversaciones de improvisación con El tambor. Explore el proceso de coreografía grupal colaborativa: crear en comunidad. Ampliar el vocabulario de movimiento.
TAMBOR:
4:00 – 5:00 PM Clase de tambor (12 – Adultos) $225 _____

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Trains: Take PATH to Grove Street STOP, then a short walk east towards the water on Columbus turning left onto Warren Street, venue at 329 Warren Street. Or Exchange Place STOP walk west on Columbus away from the water to Warren street turn right for venue.
Car: Limited street or paid parking available in the area of Downtown Jersey City.
What can I bring into the studio?
For dance, dress comfortably with soft shoes/sneakers; a limited number of dance skirts and drums are available in class. If you own a dance skirt or drum please bring it with you. Bring your own water, personal hand sanitizer and mask.
