Michael and Gail Zera - Z Place to Dance
Mike and Gail have taught, performed and competed since they were children, studying most forms of dance. Mike and Gail both received their BA in Dance from the State University of New York.
Gail went on to receive her Masters in Dance from Brigham Young University, where she auditioned and was chosen to be one of 11 women out of 116 to make BYU's Ballroom Dance Formation Team. She finished her Masters of Dance program as Valedictorian. Gail passed her ISTD teaching exams with “High Honors,” which made her a qualified adjudicator with the National Dance Council of America.
Mike's parents were ballroom studio owners, which afforded him the opportunity to learn from the best teachers from an early age. He has won numerous competitions. He was a finalist in the “Mr. Dance of America” competition and was offered scholarships to the Joffrey, San Francisco, and Atlanta Ballet Companies.
Together, Mike and Gail have studied regularly from some of the best ballroom teachers in the world including Nadia Eqandel, Glenn Weiss, Maja Serve and Ann Harding, who are all former World and Blackpool British Open champions and finalists in Standard and Latin. Their coaches currently are adjudicators for the top competitions in the world and are the coaches of many World and United States champions and finalists.
Mike and Gail have developed ballroom dance programs in elementary, junior high and high schools, as well as coached competitors who have made the finals of the United States Amateur Championships. They love teaching and have been fortunate to teach in professional studios, public schools and universities in New York, L.A., and Utah and continue to do so in Oregon.
Although they can teach competitors, they enjoy teaching social dancers, and love to help them with the mechanics that make communication and movement easier and, in turn, more fun.
