Celebrate the natural world’s beauty and tradition’s wisdom through story and art. Children will create their nature collage, using watercolor to paint a landscape backdrop and layering it with real dried leaves, flowers, and twigs to bring their scene to life in 3D. Then listen to The First Blade of Sweet Grass by Suzanne Greenlaw and Gabriel Frey, a gentle tale about a young Wabanaki girl learning to harvest sweet grass with care and respect. This project honors Native American Heritage Month and draws inspiration from the breathtaking Yosemite landscapes painted by Albert Bierstadt, whose works captured the majesty of the land that has long been home to Indigenous peoples.2nd Saturday for Families events are designed for children ages 5-12, and feature an enchanting read-out-loud experience and art activity thoughtfully designed for young readers and budding artists! Each session features a hands-on project inspired by the story and a carefully selected book aligned with our exhibits or monthly theme. Reservations are not required, but seating is available on a first come-first served basis. Materials and activities are included with regular museum admission.
