Event Description Join The Clever Canine and Animal Friends of NCWV in our second 1 mile Turkey Trot and hosting of the 3rd Annual AKC FIT DOG Turkey Trot 5K (3.1 miles) that people do with their dogs. This non-competitive 1 mile and 5K Turkey Trot can be a walk or run activity, where participants go at their own pace. More details about the AKC Fit Dog Turkey Trot below.
Proceeds from the AKC Fit Dog Turkey Trot will benefit the AKC Junior Handlers. Proceeds from the 1 mile Turkey Trot will be donated to Animal Friends of NCWV!!!!
Terra Cafe is hosting us! so come and enjoy some of their tasty food and drinks! More details to come!
Event details and schedule
Registration is required by October 19th to receive medals for dogs. (Late Registration will be allowed but will not guarantee a medal).
Start Location:
Edith Barill Park Rail Trail Mile Marker 6.5. The walk/run will go North. Turn around for 1 miles at mile marker 6.0 (where the pavement stops). Turn around for 5K is at approximately the 5 mile mark. Turn around for the combined 1 mile/5K is at approximately mile marker 4.45.
Time: The race walk/run will start at 12pm.
Early Packet Pick Up:

Participants will bring: water, treats, and have dog on leash and collar or harness. Route will be along the Rail Trail.
The 5K (3.1 miles) can be walked/run all at once for people and dogs who are fit, or you may break your 5K into as many days/sessions as you need to keep you and your dog safe.
Registration Includes:
3” Turkey Trot medal with a ribbon (If registration is completed by October 19th, 2024) for AKC Fit Dog Turkey Trot.
Medal for Walk/Run Completion for all dog participants.
FROM THE CLEVER CANINE
All breeds and all levels of social skills are welcome.
For proper dog socialization, courtesy, and everyone’s safety, we do ask that you follow a few basic rules when joining our Adventure:
1. Dogs in need of space from other dogs or humans should be wearing a bandanna or leash that is easily visible to other attendees. If you are concerned about your dog's sociability level for attendance, please contact Kris Snider at The Clever Canine.
Color Code:
Red - Beware of the dog and do not get too close.
Orange - This dog does not get along well with other dogs.
Yellow - The dog is unpredictable and edgy.
Green - Friendly nature.
Blue - Service animal. It is training or working. Do not disturb.
White - Difficulty hearing or seeeing. Blind or Deaf.
Purple - Do not feed anything to the dog.
2. No retractable leashes or leashes longer than 6 feet long DURING the hike/walk.
3. NO greeting/interacting with other dogs present until AFTER the walk. Then, ALWAYS ASK handler first. Some dogs present may be working to overcome aggression and reactivity - give them space and be aware of your surroundings at all times.
4. Utilize waste bags and be respectful of the areas we'll be visiting.
5. Bring water for you and your dog, along with high value treats and/toy.
6. Wear appropriate shoes.
7. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
The AKC FIT DOG Turkey Trot - per the AKC website ( will be updated with 2024 details once avaialable - but this was 2023...)
The AKC FIT DOG Turkey Trot is a virtual 5K (3.1 miles) that people do with their dogs. This non-competitive 5K Turkey Trot can be done all at one time, or in smaller segments on multiple days so that everyone (people and dogs) can participate at their own pace. This can be a walk or run activity.
This year, Turkey Trot proceeds will be used to support programs for AKC Juniors. Juniors participate in multiple AKC events, and they can earn scholarships for their education.
Details
Between September 1, 2023, and December 15, 2023, you and your dog can walk/run your 5K.
The 5K (3.1 miles) can be walked/run all at once for people and dogs who are fit, or you may break your 5K into as many days/sessions as you need to keep you and your dog safe.
You and your dog can do the Turkey Trot on your own, with a group of friends and their dogs, or with your AKC FIT DOG club.
This Turkey Trot can be done anywhere that you and your dog are welcome to walk/run – in a local park, on a trail, or in your neighborhood.
We are keeping the Turkey Trot open past Thanksgiving for those who are running/walking in segments.
Registration Fee
$20 donation, includes the 3” Turkey Trot medal with a ribbon.
How It Works
Between September 1, 2023, and December 12, 2023, complete the 5K (3.1 miles) with your dog. This can be all at once, or in as many days/sessions as you need.
Document your distances and times on a smartphone, smartwatch (or similar device), or on a written log.
Order your attractive AKC FIT DOG Turkey Trot medal.
The AKC FIT DOG Turkey Trot is done on an honor system. We are allowing medals to be ordered now so that AKC FIT DOG clubs and participants have them in time for Thanksgiving Turkey Trot photos.
The Turkey Trot counts toward AKC FIT DOG title points!
There is a no refund policy. As this is for donation to Animal Friends of NCWV!
