24th Annual Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing Celebration

This year’s performance, "Seeking Freedom Long Before and Long After 1776," commemorates America’s 250th anniversary while exploring another fight for freedom unfolding during the same era.
A cast of 20 actors will bring scenes from America’s struggle for freedom to life through dramatic performances, historic spirituals that were actually sung by enslaved people, live music, and powerful storytelling tied directly to Missouri’s past. Children also play important roles throughout the production, reflecting the experiences of young people living under slavery.
It also marks an important first— after 23 years at the Freedom Crossing site, organizers decided to move the theatrical production downtown to the performance area beneath the Gateway Arch while continuing to hold the memorial ceremony at the original location each spring.
