Union Ave Books is excited to present an anthology reading for 24 Tales: More Appalachian Ghost Stories, Legends & Mysteries featuring Patty Ireland, Victoria Jordan, Anna Wooliver Phillips, Kevin Saylor, Terry Shaw, and Suzy Trotta. This event will take place on October 27th at 3pm at our bookstore. This is a free event. Please RSVP via the ticket link.ABOUT THE BOOK
A playful little girl who never left a train station.
A boy lost forever in the Great Smoky Mountains.
A father’s promise that haunts through the ages.
Rooms you never want to enter. Homes you may never leave. A long-gone country legend still singing and strumming.
Are they malevolent spirits? Friendly tricksters? The result of vivid imaginations?
A few of our writers are ghost skeptics; others have no doubts.
Read their work and decide for yourself.
What do you have to lose … besides a little sleep?
ABOUT THE READERS
Patty Ireland holds a master’s degree in creative writing from the University of Tennessee Knoxville and is associate professor of English at Pellissippi State Community College, where she directs its Young Creative Writer’s Workshop. In addition to writing fiction and poetry, Ireland is a lyricist/composer. Her work has appeared in Still: The Journal, 100 Days in Appalachia’s “Creators and Innovators,” and Appalachia Bare, among others.
Victoria Jordan, retired after a career in real estate, now has time to use writing skills cultivated at the University of Wisconsin. Jordan has participated in poetry, short story, and screenwriting groups in the Knoxville Writers Guild. She has remained actively involved in East Tennessee’s arts and music community while continuing to discover the natural beauty of this area with her husband, Michael.
Anna Wooliver Phillips hails from a large South Knoxville family and is descended from coal miners and gentlemen river boat captains. A University of Tennessee alumna, she’s usually in her urban garden when she’s not moonlighting as a local librarian and small business owner. Momma to a bitty baby, a black cat, and a standard poodle, Anna takes her husband to cemeteries and graveyards around the world and writes non-fiction and fiction inspired by her Appalachian heritage.
Kevin Saylor was born and raised in Oak Ridge. He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and spent 15 years as a freelance columnist for the Knoxville News Sentinel, covering entertainment and writing the Notsville.com parody blog. His work has appeared in “Cumberland Avenue Revisited: Four Decades of Music From Knoxville Tennessee,” “East Tennessee Garden Stories,” and “23 Tales: Appalachian Ghost Stories, Legends & Other Mysteries.”
Terry Shaw has worked as a journalist, a copywriter and publicist, a freelance book editor, and the content manager for a Fortune 500 company. He also published a novel, “The Way Life Should Be,” with Touchstone/Simon & Schuster. Shaw serves on the board of the Tennessee Mountain Writers and is a past president of the Knoxville Writers' Guild. He cofounded Howling Hills Publishing in December 2022.
Suzy Trotta is the author of “Open House: Mostly True Tales of Crazy in Southern Real Estate.” She has also had work in The Knoxville Writers Guild “ReView.” You can read about another one of her ghost encounters in “23 Tales: Appalachian Ghost Stories, Legends & Other Mysteries.” Suzy lives in Knoxville with her husband, cats, and baby angel dog, Jolene.
