About this Event
Join us at the enlightening 23rd Erasmus-Descartes Conference on food sovereignty, where policymakers, scientists, entrepreneurs, civil society, and students come together to shape the future of the agricultural sector in Europe and beyond. Around four roundtables, together we will explore the path to build a more sustainable, competitive and resilient food system, and to enhance European food sovereignty. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of one of the major global revolutions ahead of us!
As leading players in the agri-food sector on an international scale, France and the Netherlands play a key role in addressing global challenges, whether environmental, geopolitical, economic or public health-related. The countries' close cooperation in science and innovation is a reflection of their capacity for joint action. Both nations have stressed the importance of promoting innovative and environment-friendly agriculture, reducing dependency on limited resources while strengthening local and circular production.
The aim of this conference is to foster bilateral dialogue, share best practices, identify new partners, announce joint initiatives, and propose a concrete action plan in terms of science and education.

Powering Resilient Agriculture: Plant Proteins & Next-Gen Breeding
Info: In a changing climate, cooperation across borders is key to strengthening food sovereignty and resilience. This session will highlight the crucial role of seeds and next-gen breeding technologies, and the need for closer collaboration between research, industry, and government. Furthermore, it is essential to involve farmers, retailers and consumers in the discussion as they represent bottlenecks in production and distribution systems.
Also recogniszing the importance of food transition in this context, the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and the promotio of more plant-based diets can help reduce our ecological footprint but also improve food security. By working together, we can build a future-ready agriculture where food is not only sufficient but also healthy and environmentally friendly.

Smart Farming for Sovereignty: Robotics, AI & IoT, and Photonics
Info: This roundtable will explore the role of robotics and innovation in shaping the future of agriculture, with a special focus on the balance between tradition and technological transformation. Discussions will highlight the importance of scientific research as a driver of change, while addressing key challenges such as data protection, limited farmer engagement, and insufficient funding. The session will also outline next steps, including training of database, building confidence in robotic solutions, and fostering Franco-Dutch cooperation to advance data regulation at the European level. Emerging technologies such as AI, quantum computing and drones will also be discussed for their potential to further enhance precision farming and agricultural resilience.
