Welcome to the 21st Annual Wiley A. Branton Symposium!

Each year, the Howard Law Journal facilitates the Branton Symposium to honor HUSL’s former Dean and civil rights activist, the late Wiley A. Branton. We seek to honor the legacy of the selfless advocate who, as Justice Thurgood Marshall described, “devoted his entire life to fighting for his own people.” The Branton Symposium aims to engage a vast array of scholars across the ideological spectrum who are committed to addressing the most significant, relevant, and timely legal issues that our country faces.

Through three panels and a fireside chat, the Symposium will explore the roles and responsibilities of social engineers in crafting the future of the 14th Amendment by acknowledging the disenfranchisement of people of color and building toward sociopolitical equality. We hope to foster a thought-provoking dialogue where legal scholars can investigate the effects of 14th Amendment jurisprudence and precedents while simultaneously posing re-imaginations for an equitable future.
