2026 Summer Social & Annual Meeting
About this Event
Completed in 1949, the 22-story residential tower was Mies van der Rohe’s first high-rise and the first of his buildings to feature an exposed structural frame. Its pioneering design led to other high-rise apartment buildings for Mies, including 860-880 Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, and Lafayette Park in Detroit. The Promontory Apartments are listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a significant example of modern design. In 2019, Docomomo US/Chicago board chair David Fleener helped secure Chicago Landmark designation for the building, ensuring that its significant architectural features will be preserved and protected.
Thanks to the generosity of several residents, we are excited to explore this amazing architectural icon together. The event will include time to socialize, a recap of our chapter’s past year activities, and tours of individual apartments. Drinks and snacks will be provided.
The event is free to Docomomo US members as thanks for your ongoing support. Each member can also bring one guest for a small fee. (Please note the three options when registering.)
If you are not a member, you can join HERE. Your membership helps support Docomomo's nationwide mission to celebrate and preserve modern architecture and design.
Street parking is available. The Promontory Apartments are also easily accessible from the Metra Electric line 53/55/57th Street station or CTA buses.
