SCHEDULE CHANGES IN 2026
Strum has a bigger but different schedule for 2026. Since skipper & wife are starting 2 new businesses, they will be in Vancouver for most of the summer (FIFA vs cruising Strum Jun15-Sep07). That means Strum is available for all local Div-0 events. Away regattas will need 10 committed crew 1 months in advance (due to labour requirements).
THE GOOD
New for 2026 is the confirmation of,
1. VARC-Distance Series scoring Salish Sea for Div-0 & Div-1.
New for Strum 2026
1. VARC-Distance Series (6 vs 4 events),
2. VARC-Regatta Series (4 new Strum events),
3. VIRS (Strum not racing)
4. Wednesday Evening Series (20 new Strum events)
5. VARC Awards Dinner (RVYC Nov13)
All Div-0 long courses
8 crew needed to leave dock
8 crew cap, Salish Sea Race
10 crew target, all other races
35 Strum events (vs 12 in 2025)!
THE BAD
Strum did not get the minimum crew commitments for the Vancouver Island Racing Series (VIRS) away regattas 1 month prior, which was needed for hotel reservation $0 cancellation fees and labour requirements for skippers new business. These regattas include,
1. Patos Island
2. Round Saltspring
3. Swiftsure
4. Lasqueti Island
5. SIN

2026 STRUM CREW CALL
Strum is actively recruiting for new CORE-CREW (who can commit to ALL events), or competent REGULAR-CREW (available for as many individual regattas as your schedule permits) from the 2026 Strum Schedule (above), which includes Patos, Straits, Halibut/Collingwood, Saltspring, Swiftsure, Lasqueti, SIN, Bowen, Salish Sea, FRLS &/or RTC. Apply within.
————————————————
HOW TO SIGN UP
SELECT GOING if you can race one or more events in 2026 Strum Schedule (above). You will be contacted for an in person meeting to discuss your availability, Safety At Sea status and previous experience. You are free to ask any questions you have regarding our program, but most answers can be found on our “Riptide50 Strum” Facebook page.
SELECT INTERESTED if you like the idea of racing on Strum, but are unsure of your schedule or commitments. We will reach out to find your level of interest and experience to see if we are a good fit, in the hopes of converting you from Interested to Going. Most new crew come from other Wednesday Night &/or VARC keel boat programs and we will want open communication with those skippers. “Regular-Crew” status allows you to pick events that don’t conflict with your current commitments. If you are looking to switch boats, the best time is during ski season. You can also select Interested to be notified of events/changes (popular with spouses, family & friends of Strum crew).
Core-Crew announced Feb01 each year. Regular &/or New Crew announced after Feb02, space permitting. Please note, Strum has had full crew commitments every year for the last 5 years by the Feb01 deadline. Apply ASAP & apply often!

CREW COMMITMENTS
Racing on Strum is like playing in a beer-league hockey team: Practice & game days are not optional, your team needs players on the ice with a few on the bench. All Strum crew are donating their free time to a sport they love, away from work & family. Not honouring your commitments can result in Strum staying at the dock, which is no fun for anyone. So please, say what you can do, and do what you say. This is an adventure sport, with great memories!
————————————————
TYPES OF STRUM CREW
CORE-CREW
Core-Crew is limited to 8 people with valid Safety At Sea (CAN or USA), that can commit to ALL events, preparation & deliveries. If this sound like something you want to do, please apply by selecting GOING here, or contact skipper ASAP.
REGULAR-CREW
Regular-Crew are like Core-Crew, but without the Safety At Sea &/or full event schedule commitment, and have priority below Core-Crew. Most Regular-Crew graduate to Core-Crew with valid Safety At Sea confirmation. Regular Crew have priority over Pick-Up Crew, but less than Core-Crew.
PICK-UP CREW
Crew with no previous Strum experience or future commitments. Returning crew become Regular-Crew.
————————————————
HOW WE CHOOSE NUMBER OF CREW
8 CREW EVENTS
Strum needs 8 crew to race competitively, so we generally don’t leave the dock with less than 8 crew. Some events require crew to sleep onboard. Since Strum only has 8 bunks, these events are limited to 8 crew and include,
*Lasqueti Island
*Pac-Cup
*Salish Sea
*SIN
*TransPac
*Vic-Maui.
Core-Crew have bunk priority for ALL events.
8-10 CREW EVENTS
Strum typically wants more than 8 crew where possible. We target 8-10 crew in the sub 10 knots TWS light air events. Practically, this means we confirm max 10 crew ASAP, and keep a few crew on stand-by/reserve in case the wind picks up. For logistic reasons (like hotels & restaurants) we restrict these regattas to max 10 crew,
*Patos
*Saltspring
*Swiftsure (-10TW)
*Round The County
10-12 CREW EVENTS
Max Strum crew is 12, which is ideal for predicted +15 knots TWS/upwind races. The last 2 crew are typically confirmed when heavy weather is certain (typically 1 week out). Heavy weather Vancouver events allow us to easily bump up to max 12 crew for windy regattas like,
*Southern Straits
*Collingwood/Halibut
*Swiftsure (+15TW)
*Round Bowen
*Fraser River Light Ships (FRLS)
NO CREW LIMIT EVENTS
We have no limits on the number of people that want to join our
*Xmas/House Party
*Strum Dock Party
*Sail Past Dock Party
*VARC Awards Dinner
so bring your +1 or more!

WHATSAPP GROUPS
Strum runs 3 WhatsApp Groups,
1. STRUM NEXT EVENT
Committed (core & regular) Crew to Strum’s next event will be added to our WhatsApp group called Strum Next Event. Banter is specific to the Next Event (work parties, who needs a ride, ETD/ETA), so please don’t be offended if you are removed from this group when you are not racing the Next Event. You will still be part of…
2. STRUM 2026 CREW
This group is for anyone that has committed to & is confirmed for any 2026 Strum Event. That includes Core-Crew, and Regular Crew. Basically anyone who has committed to a 2026 event. You are only removed from this group if your schedule changes that prevents you from racing on Strum for the rest of the year. You will still be part of…
3. STRUM CREW POOL
This group is for anyone anywhere that has ever raced on Strum or has shown even the most remote interest in Strum. With currently over 100 members, this group largely wants to keep in communication with us and be notified about our events. Popular among crew spouses, previous crew with more important commitments, and the odd competitor. We welcome all of you….
Although you can remove yourself from any of these WhatsApp groups at anytime.
