As the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities’ Five-Year State Plan concludes on September 20, 2026, it is an important time to reflect on the progress and successes that have strengthened systems, services, and supports for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).In 2026, North Carolina remains focused on expanding Innovations Waiver slots for 2025–2026, advancing community living initiatives, strengthening workforce development, and increasing the capacity of community-based services. As more individuals with I/DD live well into adulthood, the demand for comprehensive supports and a skilled, competent workforce has never been greater.
This year’s keynote will explore the treatment approach of positive psychology, highlighting a strengths-based framework that shifts the focus from deficits to abilities, promotes self-determination, and aims to improve overall life satisfaction rather than simply addressing limitations. The one-day conference offers something for everyone, with sessions exploring genetic conditions associated with I/DD, navigating the transition to adulthood for individuals with Down syndrome, strategies to improve activities of daily living (ADLs) for youth, and much more.
