2026 Carmel Film Forum: Learning Production Sound for Digital Creators and Filmmakers
This comprehensive, event aims to provide digital creators and filmmakers with essential, hands-on training in production sound—a crucial yet often overlooked component of professional filmmaking.
Led by professional location sound mixer Brian Hansen, who has over 25 years of experience in the industry, the workshop is designed for creators at all skill levels. The event will occur in two different locations, offering both classroom instruction and immersive field practice.
Event Schedule and Highlights:
Session One (1:00 PM – 4:00 PM): This session will be held in the Community Room at the Carmel Clay Public Library. It will cover the fundamentals of sound recording, including core concepts of audio quality, equipment selection (including microphone techniques for smartphones and video cameras), and strategies for achieving clean, distortion-free audio during production.
Session Two (5:00 PM – 7:00 PM): The forum will then relocate to the picnic shelter at Flowing Well Park, located at 5100 E. 116th St., Carmel, IN 46033. This session will focus on field recording and sound design, exploring Foley techniques using custom soundboxes, contact microphones, and ambient noise capture. Participants will also engage in an interactive sound scavenger hunt using their smartphones, with their findings and discussions recorded for an upcoming episode of the IFN’s Room Tone Podcast.
"Sound quality often differentiates amateur projects from professional ones," said James Moriarty, Producer and Host of the Carmel Film Forum. "With this workshop, we aim to close the gap in regional technical training by equipping creators with the skills they need to enhance their video and film work through high-quality audio."
This event is funded in part by a Carmel Arts Grant and is made possible through the support of the Indy Film Fest and Round Table Recording Company. The workshop is FREE and open to the public, focusing on fostering professional collaboration among sound engineers, directors, and cinematographers.
