About Book with Purpose

The Book with Purpose program aims to unite the community in dialogue around one central theme. The program began in 2021 and has continued with topics that are relevant to the larger community and wider world. Bookmarks collaborates with community organizations to connect people from all walks of life in meaningful conversation throughout the summer and fall.

Book Distribution:

4,000 copies of our Book With Purpose selection will be donated this year. Programming will be held June through August around the greater Winston-Salem area. The 2026 Book with Purpose selection is Punished For Dreaming by Dr. Bettina Love.

About Chrystal Giles, We Are Joy

Chrystal D. Giles is a champion for diversity and representation in children’s literature. She is the critcally acclaimed author of Take Back the Block and Not An Easy Win, which both received multiple accolades, best of lists, and starred reviews. Chrystal lives outside Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband and son. Her newest picture book, We Are Joy is a heartwarming, empowering celebration of Black joy!
