Russia’s President Vladimir Putin is obsessed with Ukraine. His state of mind is usually explained by either the effects of pandemic isolation or his reaction to the first or second Maidan. A different interpretation is that Putin’s obsession grew gradually from the early 1990s and that the plan for a fullscale invasion of Ukraine was approved in 2008. The timing proves that his actions were premeditated long ago and were largely motivated by the Kremlin’s neoimperialist ideology. Therefore, is a sustainable peaceful solution to the Russo-Ukrainian war possible?
Join us on March 13th for CIUS’s 2025 Annual Shevchenko Lecture, when Dr. Yaroslav Hrytsak will explore the dynamics of Russia’s war on Ukraine in light of Putin’s longstanding beliefs and attitudes towards Ukraine.
